Grass. Perennial. Sod forming by above and below ground runners. Very fine in appearance, light green, short leaves, very branchy. Sheaths loose. Ligule ciliate. Inflorescence of 3 – 5 spikes attached at one point (digitate). Spikelets in 2 rows on one side of rachis (stem of spike). Disturbed areas. Highly invasive. Similar SpeciesSporobolus virginicus has narrow panicles, grows in tidal areas; most Digitaria spp. have longer leaves and spikes; D. serotina is very hairy.
